Meet Elote
Elote was rescued by an animal advocate in San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala. He was found on the streets in horrific condition. The rescuer called in tears from the roadside, desperate for help. Elote was covered in severe mange, dangerously emaciated, and so weak he could barely stand. Leaving him behind was not an option.
The rescuer brought him back to where she was staying and provided immediate basic first aid. As his condition was critical, he was transferred to San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico, where he was hospitalized for intensive care.
Veterinarians discovered that his stomach was filled with rocks as he had been eating them in an attempt to survive. He was severely anemic, suffering from blood parasites, extreme malnutrition, and was completely shut down. He was dangerously close to death.
Elote required months of treatment in a medical care facility, including parasite treatment, nutritional rehabilitation, and constant monitoring. Slowly, with dedicated medical intervention and compassionate care, he began to recover.
After his release, his original rescuer, who had returned to the United States, came back to adopt him after moving back to Mexico, giving Elote the safe and loving home he fought so hard to live for.
